Marina Pasquini and Hotel Belvedere, a new concept of hospitality: from the early 1980s to the international successes decreed by Tripadvisor. The story of a non-stop ascent, like the desire to open up to new things with curiosity and intelligence.

THE BELVEDERE AMONGST THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS HOTELS IN THE WORLD
The creative vivacity and indomitable initiative of Marina Pasquini promptly brings the name of Riccione into the international spotlight. Her hotel, the Belvedere, won first place in Italy and in Europe, and second place among the most prestigious hotels in the world decreed by TripAdvisor (web portal that publishes reviews), in the Travelers’ Choice Hotel Awards 2019, awards dedicated to the excellence of global hospitality.

What caused the Belvedere to jump into the Olympus of the rankings were the positive opinions of guests who continue to choose it, and therefore, through the portal, promote it, for its eclectic features, those that can transform a normal hotel into a hotel of excellence .

A structure that her beloved father Giuliano, a building contractor, entrusted to her at the age of 19 and for which she was able to adopt the best and most effective strategies to transform, and not with a magic wand but through intense research, hard work and tenacity and aiming straight for quality, a normal three-star hotel on the Riviera, open for the classic 90 days a year, into a four-star hotel with an established reputation and closed only in the few, very cold months. A great example of how the determination of a woman, with all her baggage of sensitivity and imagination, is able to unhinge the most obvious formulas of the tourist proposal, with the specific intent of creating something innovative and ambitious.

LA SCUOLA DELL’OSPITALITA’ ? A CASA

THE SCHOOL OF HOSPITALITY? AT HOME
How did you arrive at offering a hospitality that does you great international honour? “Having no family tradition behind me in the field of tourism, I learnt hospitality in my home. When I was little, I lived with my family in the Borgo di San Giuliano in Rimini, but then my father decided to move us all to the inland, to Spadarolo (the house where my sister still lives). In order for us not to feel isolated, also because my mother was pregnant at the time and did not drive, she used to invite many family friends and their children to our house; it soon became full of people, where every occasion was the perfect excuse to have a celebration. A swimming pool was built, and with my mother who was a very good cook and my father who was a real joker and an innate director, hospitality became my induced vocation. A vocation that I then invested, implementing it, in the Belvedere “.

1989 WITH THE MUCILAGE, WE FACED A CHALLENGE
When, and thanks to what, did your hotel adventure start? “In 1980 my father gave me the hotel: those of the first decade were easy years, where we worked well with young people who came to Riccione to have fun, especially in the evenings in the discos. Then came 1989, the year of mucilage: paradoxically a ‘blessing’, because it put the more static way of doing tourism into question, stimulating new ideas and fielding new resources. At that point I thought “what kind of guest comes to Riccione… what can I do to get them to arrive?”.

E poi sempre avanti, avanti…

Bringing children back here was my first response, conquering a Family market thanks to the more specific services that we set up. With the advent of the web, horizons expanded dramatically; at this point I realized that I had to renovate the hotel and its offers, turning it into a wellness hotel, starting with the sports aspect: Bike was a lucky choice, also because I focused on the entertainment of the cyclists’ wives and partners, with excursions , cooking classes, shopping and pleasant shared moments. And then from there always forward, forward …

How did and do you always manage to intercept new solutions? “I never stop, I’m constantly looking for new things to surprise my guests; I believe that one of the biggest flaws of those who are in tourism, and not just hoteliers, is that of ‘sitting back’, of being satisfied. I have always travelled a lot, convinced that if you sell holidays you must be the first to travel, and see for yourself how much beauty can be found in places and structures around the world; knowing the excellence of the hotel industry, you can then find the right inspiration that comes from comparing yourself with those who are stronger than you.

What is your objective? “I want that when a guest returns home, not only do they remember a nice holiday made up of haute cuisine, an elegant SPA, comfortable rooms or pool parties … but that they feel they are a better person; better for the new interests that they may have acquired, for the new friends they have made. And I also want them to not be able to help but come to the Belvedere; this is why I have a daily dialogue with them via Facebook, because communication is now, more than ever, the winning strategy “.

“THE BELVEDERE IS NOT MY MEANS TO LIVE BUT MY WAY OF LIFE”
What is the driving sentiment regarding such an all-encompassing enterprise? “The Belvedere is not my means to live, but my way of life. My husband Romeo works with me, in a profitable and balanced understanding: we are different but complementary, I am the volcano and he is the logic. Also my son, Filippo, is trying his hand, with a lot of commitment, in the family business. Even my mother, Maria Teresa, who is 82 years old, continues to be an excellent hostess. Moreover, I am surrounded by about forty valid collaborators who are like me, open to change. In there,  I do and create everything I like, and nothing is a burden for that very reason. Of course, there are many things to follow so that everything goes smoothly; it takes a lot of awareness and attention to detail.

What kind of clientele chooses to spend their holidays in Riccione? “Mainly Italian clientele but also international such as North European, American, Canadian, Australian. One might ask: why do they come to Riccione to take a holiday? Certainly not just to lie down under an umbrella on the beach! Here they are looking for an active holiday, to do things that maybe they do at home but that they want to do more of while on holiday.

Here on the Riviera we have everything you need, from a wonderful hinterland, an extraordinary gastronomy, and excellent facilities for any sport. Each Municipality, enhancing its own strengths, should differentiate itself according to its own unique identity, and then reconnect with the others to allow for an articulated offer. However, it is absolutely essential that the offer is as rich and detailed as possible, that it is communicated more and at the right time “.
